In the past, a Civil Law intern's role involved being a general legal assistant in a legal practice that worked predominantly with civil human rights. They were asked to:
  • Conduct legal research for the Barrister and write up reports on this research.
  • Complete administrative tasks, such as: stripping files for archiving and destroying files over 7 years old, updating legal texts, taking calls, writing up messages, setting up Skype calls, filing, photocopying, compiling document bundles, writing up a draft of interview notes.
  • Attend client interviews, meetings, meditations and court hearings if any occur during the internship period. 

Corporate Law

 
Corporate Law is the field of law that deals with how shareholders, directors and employees within a company interact with consumers, stakeholders and the environment. Tasks of a Corporate Law intern may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting solicitors in drafting legal documents,
  • File management,
  • Liaising with clients,
  • Occasional court attendances,
  • General administrative duties.

As an intern, you undertake legal support work to support Public Defence Service lawyers, who are responsible for providing high quality defence representation to legally aided clients. You will develop the depth and breadth of your legal knowledge and skills, and become familiar with applying them in a wide range of real situations. You might be responsible for:
  • Working on criminal legal aid cases under the direct supervision of a legal manger or senior lawyer, including legal research and drafting legal submissions.
  • Developing and maintaining effective internal and external relationships.
